The keyword field is unique to iOS — Google Play does not have an equivalent (Android relies on the long description for keyword indexing). Despite being invisible to users, the keyword field is one of the most important ASO tools available to iOS developers because it directly tells Apple which searches your app is relevant for.

To maximize your 100 characters, follow these formatting rules: separate keywords with commas, do not include spaces after commas, use singular forms only (Apple automatically handles plurals), do not repeat any words already in your title or subtitle (they are already indexed), and avoid common words like "the," "and," or "app." Each character is precious — removing unnecessary spaces can free up room for additional keywords.

Keyword selection should be data-driven. Use ASO tools to identify terms with high search volume and manageable competition. Prioritize keywords where you have a realistic chance of ranking in the top 10 — ranking 50th for a high-volume term provides almost no value. Include a mix of head terms (broad, high-volume) and long-tail terms (specific, lower-volume but higher-intent). Review and update your keyword field with every app release, removing underperforming terms and testing new ones. Track your ranking for each keyword to measure the impact of changes.
