Category rankings are one of the most visible forms of app store discovery. Users frequently browse top charts within categories like "Productivity," "Health & Fitness," or "Finance," making a high category ranking a powerful source of organic impressions and downloads.

The ranking algorithm is proprietary, but ASO experts have identified several key factors. Download velocity — the number of new installs in a recent time window — is the strongest signal. Revenue also plays a role, particularly for "Top Grossing" charts. User engagement metrics like session length, retention rates, and daily active users influence long-term ranking stability. Ratings and review velocity provide additional ranking signals. Apple and Google both maintain separate "Top Free," "Top Paid," and "Top Grossing" charts per category.

Choosing the right category is itself an ASO decision. A less competitive category where you can rank in the top 20 may drive more downloads than a highly competitive one where you rank 150th. Both iOS and Android let you select a primary and secondary category — choose your primary based on user intent alignment and competition level, and use the secondary for additional exposure. Monitor your category ranking daily, as it can fluctuate significantly based on competitor activity and seasonal trends.
