Why screenshot dimensions matter for App Store Connect

App Store Connect rejects builds that ship screenshots in the wrong dimensions. Apple expects exact pixel-perfect matches for each device class, like 1320x2868 for iPhone 16 Pro Max and 1290x2796 for iPhone 15 Pro Max. A 1290x2868 file fits neither and triggers a manual rework before the listing goes live.

Beyond rejection, wrong dimensions hurt conversion. When you upload a smaller screenshot, Apple scales it up to match the device viewport, introducing blur. Users browsing on a Pro Max see your blurry screenshot next to a competitor that shipped at native resolution, and the perceived quality gap is enough to lose the tap.

Google Play is more forgiving on dimensions but still cares about aspect ratio. Anything outside the 320 to 3840 pixel range gets rejected. Anything with an aspect ratio over 2:1 also fails. Common compliant sizes for Play Store are 1080x1920 for phones and 1600x2560 for tablets.

Cover crop vs letterbox, when to use each

Cover crop scales your source until it fills the target frame, then trims any overflow. The output has zero padding and looks like a native screenshot. The cost is that pixels at the top, bottom, left, or right of the source can be cut off. Cover crop works best when your screenshot has safe whitespace at the edges, like a status bar or a tab bar that the crop will not chop into.

Letterbox preserves the entire source by scaling to fit, then padding the unused area with a chosen background color. Nothing gets cropped but you get visible bars on at least one axis. Letterbox is the safe choice for content-dense screenshots where every pixel matters, like settings panels, transaction lists, or chat threads.

The default background color is sampled from the corners of your source so the letterbox bars blend naturally. Pick a custom color from the picker if your source has a gradient or busy edges. Pure white or pure black tend to look cleaner than a brand color in most reviews.

Avoiding the alpha-channel rejection

The single most common screenshot rejection on App Store Connect is the alpha channel issue. PNGs exported from design tools or screenshot apps often retain a transparency layer even when no pixel actually appears transparent. Apple rejects any PNG where any pixel has an alpha value below 100 percent.

This tool fills the canvas with an opaque background before drawing your source, so every output PNG is fully opaque regardless of the source. If you upload a transparent source, the letterbox color or pure black fills the gaps, and the resulting PNG passes Apple validation cleanly.

For extra safety, JPEG output never has alpha, but App Store Connect prefers PNG for sharpness on detailed UI. Stick with PNG and let the tool handle the alpha problem.

Batch resizing for multiple device classes

A typical iOS submission needs three to four device classes covered: 6.9 inch iPhone 16 Pro Max, 6.7 inch iPhone 15 Pro Max, 5.5 inch iPhone 8 Plus, and 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Doing each resize manually in Figma or Photoshop costs an hour per screenshot, multiplied by every screenshot in your set.

This tool runs all 10 target sizes in parallel from a single source and packages them into a zip organized by platform folder. The iOS folder maps directly to App Store Connect upload slots, the Android folder maps to Play Console. Drop the zip, drag each file into the right slot, ship.

For an entire screenshot set across multiple frames with custom backgrounds, captions, and device mockups, the full ScreenMagic generator handles the design and resizing in one workflow. This standalone resizer is the fastest path when you already have finished designs that just need to fit every store slot.

Frequently asked questions

What source size works best?

A native screenshot from your largest target device gives the cleanest result. If you can capture at 1320x2868 from an iPhone 16 Pro Max simulator, every smaller size will look crisp. Smaller sources still work, the tool just cannot add detail that was not there.

Cover crop or letterbox, which one should I pick?

Cover crop fills the target dimensions and trims the edges. Use it when your screenshot has safe negative space at the top and bottom. Letterbox preserves the full frame and pads with a background color. Use it when every pixel of the source matters, like dashboards or detailed lists.

Will Apple reject my resized screenshots?

Apple rejects screenshots with alpha transparency and screenshots in the wrong size for the device class. This tool flattens any alpha channel and outputs PNG at the exact required size, so submissions pass review. Make sure your source has no transparent pixels before resizing.

Does the tool upload my screenshot anywhere?

No, every operation runs in your browser using the Canvas API and JSZip. No file ever leaves your device. The privacy posture matters because pre-launch screenshots often contain sensitive UI, internal data, or work in progress.

Can I resize multiple screenshots at once?

This version handles one screenshot at a time across all target sizes. For batch processing across an entire screenshot set, the full ScreenMagic generator handles multi-screenshot exports with custom backgrounds, captions, and device frames.
