Why a mockup beats a raw screenshot

A screenshot dropped straight into a listing or a landing page reads as unfinished, a rectangle floating with no context. A device frame does two things at once: it tells the viewer instantly what platform they are looking at, and it crops attention to the screen itself instead of the browser chrome or desktop background that often surrounds a raw capture.

It also matters for trust. Shoppers comparing apps on a store page or a marketing site unconsciously read a properly framed mockup as more finished than a bare image, the same way a product photo on a mannequin reads as more credible than the same garment flat on a table.

Picking the right frame for your screenshot

The tool matches frame to aspect ratio automatically, phone screenshots get phone frames, tablet screenshots get tablet frames, but the specific model still matters for accuracy. An iPhone screenshot mocked up in an Android frame, or the reverse, reads as wrong to anyone who owns either device, which is most of your audience.

For an App Store listing specifically, the frame you mock up with does not need to match the exact device Apple requires for that screenshot slot, the export size does. Use whichever frame looks best for a blog post or a social share, then run the same screenshot through the resizer for the exact App Store Connect dimensions.

Cover crop, and why the tool does not letterbox

The screen window in every frame gets filled edge to edge, scaling your screenshot up and cropping the overflow rather than shrinking it to fit with padding. That matches how every real store listing displays a screenshot: full bleed inside the device glass, never letterboxed.

The trade-off is that content very close to the edges of your original screenshot can get cropped. A status bar or a bottom tab bar survives fine, a call-to-action button placed one pixel from the edge might not. Leave a small margin around anything critical before uploading.

A mockup is not a full App Store screenshot

A device frame alone rarely converts on its own in a store listing. What moves downloads is the frame plus a short headline stating the benefit, a background that fits the app's category, and a sequence across two to four screenshots that tells a story rather than showing isolated screens.
